Latest insights & statistics

Following the usual trend, April’s total liquidations plummeted from March’s peak by 28%. The increased number of liquidations seen in March exaggerates the significance of this drop.  It is worth noting that April still sits 18% higher than 2023 and 38% higher than 2022. Based on our forecasts, we expect liquidations to level out over the coming months, with a 10% to 20% increase by June.

Liquidations in March

The last month of the financial year is crucial for analysing insolvency in New Zealand. Consistently the highest month for the number of liquidations, March allows us to compare national insolvency from year to year. Given the current economic climate and the challenges many businesses face, reviewing data from previous years is invaluable. From NZ’s first COVID lockdown in February 2020, March liquidations increased 64% to 2024, following suit with inflation.

As previously highlighted, 2024 hit the highest monthly liquidations since 2015, which peaked with 299 liquidations. This retrospective analysis offers a broader perspective and deeper understanding of the trends and patterns of insolvency in New Zealand.
